A warm summertime greeted 64 anglers in 32 teams for Round 1 of the Gamakatsu Teams Series

The Sports Fishing Magazines Clarence River Event had again had a few people in anticipation of that big bag, the pre fish for most proving successful and some good fish being talked about. On comp day the bigger fish decided to head to the hills and prove harder to catch then most anticipated. The popular spots were the usual Browns Rocks and the mix of walls on the lower parts of the river, for most teams getting the fish on the day involved sifting through all the small fish to catch those legal fish.

With over $7800 worth of prizes and a whole heap of giveaways it worked out that every team in the field walked away with close to their entry fee in prizes, with a great free meal from the pub and a few drinks being handed out on the water and back at the weigh-in the anglers had a great time and a good event to kick off the Gamakatsu Teams Series for the 08-09 season. The total fish caught was 132 with an average weight of 399g per fish showing that even though the fish were small their weight  was good showing a good healthy Clarence River system.

The winners bag of 2.99kg caught by Team Big River Bait & Tackle with anglers Brenton Smith and Darren Painter came from the Browns Rocks area using Shake & Bake blades and toughing it out amongst all the small fish to catch their bag. Their technique was simple just reaching the bottom and little movement and the fish would have the smallest bumps and then load up the rod. Using most of the session to catch their five keepers and a couple of upgrades they did not find any hot bites during the session, just slugged it out and did not move from Browns Rocks.

Second place was the other team of Big River Bait & Tackle 2 with anglers Brett Young and Mark Mulligan catching a bag of 2.745kg off middle wall. Using again Shake and Bake blades and a simular technique most of their fish came early they then tried to find some bigger fish but could not get that kicker to get them to 1st place.

Big bream came in a way of a tie this event, both Team Gimp & Shrimp and Team Pfluger catching a good bream of 820g they shared the $250 cash and the $250 Flow-Rite voucher. Team Gimp & Shrimp caught their fish up one of the creeks, must be where they are fishing for the Classic Grand Final and want to keep the spot a secret while Team Pfluger caught theirs in the last 10 minutes on the walls near Yamba, using a Gulp Shrimp with its tail cut off to expose the hook more to get those timid bites.

Kids Big Bag was won by Jay Gillespie from team Green Machine with a 2 fish weight of 1.085kg, luckily just keeping the competition away after at the weigh in dropping a fish over the side getting it our of the livewell with a unlucky bounce of the fish out of the net instead of into the bag. Jay still keeping the lead to win over $250 worth of products from Gamakatsu, Atomic Guzzlerz & Atomic Hardz.

The next event will see the Evinrude Etec Ballina Round tie up with the Ballina River Festival and having a tank and public weigh-in during the festival should be a great time and fun for the family and anglers with rides, bands all at the weigh-in.
