Austackle Gold Coast Fish Off

'

A cheerful 102 anglers turned out for Rd 3 of the $100,000 Gamakatsu Team Series on the Gold Coast presented by Austackle. Recent rains had a handful of teams wondering if the event will be a tough challenge or a fish-a-cast affair. The sunny Gold Coast day landed somewhere in between, with most teams bringing in limits.

It was regular breamer’s “Budds Bait and Tackle” Nick Whyte and Rick Luker who tempted the five heaviest bream to the livewell, and ultimately the scales, to take home the cash and prizes from Austackle. Fishing the seawalls around the Broadwater, Nick and Rick cranked deep diving Jackall Chubbies to great success until about 9.30am when their bite stopped. For the remaining 3 hours they searched for the elusive “kicker”, which never came. Doing the numbers on the weigh back they wondered if their 3.11kg was enough. Lucky for them it was.

Early to weigh in, and a long time to wait, first time bream competitors Nigel and Zac Skyring landed themselves the second place cheque and bundle of goodies from Austackle. Like first place the “Skyring Bros” team headed to the Broadwater seawalls, only on the northern side of the entrance. Watching the sounder for where the water came up from 7m to 2m Nigel and Zac would drop their 2” shrimp down to the hungry bream. Again the bite died early at the seaway, so the Skyring duo headed to the bridges, where they lost 2 good fish. But it was Zac’s last ditch effort near the finishing point that got them their fifth fish, and helped Zac score the Atomic Lures “Kids Big Bag”.

Rounding out the top 3 was regular GTS supporters Team Tender, Scott Lane and Shane Jarrett. Using locally made Scizz Blades, in gold finish, they found their willing bream in 10m of water hugging the coffee rock. The bite really produced on the last of the run in tide and slack water.
The sponsor bonus programs were spread right across the field with, Darrin Crowley landing his 3rd Damiki Big Bream prize. The .890g fish fell victim to a Salmon Roe Chubby connected to 2lb crystal mainline. Its was a battle of wits as Darrin commented he could feel the hooks pull, praying the bream had enough stuck in him to get it in the boat.
The Blu-Eye Eyewear mystery weight was a split decision awarded to “Tight Lines” and “Lucky Craft”.
GTS would like to thank all sponsors and we look forward to seeing you all at Rd 4 on the Clarence River in Iluka.
